    Consciousness Reframed 2024

    Theme: "The Chimæric Mind”

    July 5,6 and 7, 2024, Shanghai, China

    and telematically revisiting the 1992 Telenoia

     

     

    The XX International Conference Consciousness Reframed 2024 will reflect on the theme "The Chimæric Mind” exploring the ethical, philosophical, political, spiritual, cultural, and aesthetic facets of the profound intersection between machine and human cognition. In a world where artificial intelligence propels discussions across disciplines, challenging our understanding of reality, self, and the potential futures of humanity, our conference aims to dissect and envision the implications of this synthesis through keynotes, papers, panels, artist talks, workshops, performances, and exhibitions, welcoming visionary perspectives of artists, scientists, technologists, and theorists to convolutional conversations and entanglements.

     

     

    We invite submissions that respond to the theme, The Chimæric Mind” and the sub-themes:

     

    Humans-AI-Entanglements
    The Syncretic Mind: Beyond Spirituality
    Artificial Time, Scale, and Space
    Transcendent AI: on Artificial Consciousness
    Molmedia: The Quantum Biology of Mind
    Moist-Encounters: The Artificial Biochemical
    Artificial Ecology-as-Cosmology: Decolonial-Convolutional
    On the (a)gender(s) of the Machine

     

    Note: All submissions should be written in English and must be accompanied by a signed copyright form that can be downloaded here:    

     

    The academic and creative programs are accepting submissions for the following contributions:

     

    1.Short Papers

     

    We invite submissions for original and substantial research, both traditional and non-traditional, that has not been previously published of short papers that can be 2 pages in length using the provided template. All papers must follow the academic template and will undergo double-blind peer review by the International Program Committee (IPC) based on quality, relevance, originality, and impact. The Academic Committee and Program Chairs will make the final decision on acceptance, taking into account the review recommendations. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and the Roy Ascott archive https://www.royascottarchive.com/

     

    Authors will be required to present their papers at the Consciousness Reframed conference, with a duration of 15 minutes including a Q&A session. The Academic Committee or Program Chairs may invite authors to participate in other publication outcomes from the conference in the upcoming year.

     

    Note: All short paper proposals will undergo double-blind peer review by members of the International Program Committee (IPC) and the PDF submission must be anonymized by excluding any author-related information, such as institutional affiliation, bio, author name(s), and explicit self-citations and referent bibliography, and notes in the manuscript.

     

    2. Panels 

    We invite submissions that should include abstracts and short bios from up to 3 individual panel members that have not been previously proposed to other conferences of Panels that can be 2 pages in length using the provided template. All panels must follow the academic template and will undergo double-blind peer review by the International Program Committee (IPC) based on quality, relevance, originality, and impact. The Academic Committee and Program Chairs will make the final decision on acceptance, taking into account the review recommendations. Accepted panels will be published in the conference proceedings and the Roy Ascott archive https://www.royascottarchive.com/

     

    Authors will be required to present their panels at the Consciousness Reframed conference, with a duration of 30 minutes including a Q&A session. The Academic Committee or Program Chairs may invite authors to participate in other publication outcomes from the conference in the upcoming year.

     

    Note: All panel discussion proposals will undergo double-blind peer review by members of the International Program Committee (IPC) and the PDF submission must be anonymized by excluding any author-related information, such as institutional affiliation, bio, author name(s), and explicit self-citations and referent bibliography, and notes in the manuscript.

     

    3. Workshops and Tutorials

     

    We invite submissions of proposals for Workshops that can be 2 pages in length using the provided template. All workshop proposals must follow the academic template and will be reviewed by at least two anonymous independent reviewers from the International Program Committee (IPC) based on quality, relevance, originality, and impact. Creative Works submissions don’t need to be anonymized.

     

    Despite accepted workshops will be posted on the conference website, organizers may create an independent call for submissions. The Academic Committee and Program Chairs will make the final decision on acceptance, taking into account the review recommendations. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and the Roy Ascott archive https://www.royascottarchive.com/

     

    Authors will be required to deliver their workshops at the Consciousness Reframed conference, with a duration of 2 to 3 hours including the production of video documentation to be shared online. The Academic Committee or Program Chairs may invite authors to participate in other publication outcomes from the conference in the upcoming year.

     

     

    4. Creative Works

     

    We invite artists to submit their work in response to the Consciousness Reframed 2024’s theme “The Chimæric Mind,” welcoming submissions for original Creative Works that have not been previously exhibited including a 2-page length proposal using the provided template.

     

    We seek submissions featuring digital media art, bio art, biochemical art, quantum biology-inspired explorations, and emerging art forms blending with emerging technologies, including interactive multimedia installations, digital games, expanded animation and post-camera explorations, sonic arts, creative robotics, live performances including live coding, projection mapping, and screen media.

     

    All Creative Work submissions will be reviewed by at least two anonymous independent reviewers from the International Art Jury (IAJ) and the Program Chairs will make the final decision on acceptance, taking into account the International Art Jury review recommendations. Accepted proposals will be published in the conference proceedings and the Roy Ascott archive https://www.royascottarchive.com/

     

    Authors will be required to present their proposals as Artist Talks at the Consciousness Reframed conference, with a duration of 15 minutes including a Q&A session. The Academic Committee or Program Chairs may invite authors to participate in other publication outcomes from the conference in the upcoming year.

     

    Note: All creative work submissions will be reviewed by at least two anonymous independent reviewers from the International Art Jury (IAJ) who will rank submissions based on quality, relevance, originality, and impact. Creative Works submissions don’t need to be anonymized.

     

     

     

    5. Satellite Events

     

    Honoring the ‘Planetary Collegium (CAiiA-STAR) and its ‘hub-and-nodes’ platform for academic and creative global gatherings, in a year we celebrate the 40 anniversary since it was established by Roy Ascott in 1994, we invite academics supported by their home institutions and global art and technology communities and organizations, to submit proposals for hosting Satellite Events in response to the conference theme “The Chimæric Mind” and its unfolding in sub-themes. We welcome submissions for academic gatherings or art exhibitions, following a 2-page length proposal using the provided template.

    All proposals must follow the template and will be considered by the Conference Chair and President, Professor Clarissa Ribeiro, and Roy Ascott based on their relevance to the Consciousness Reframed 2024 and allocation possibilities.
